Interpreting Human Design Authority

12 min read

A complete field guide to the seven Human Design Authorities — how each one feels from the inside, and the decision-making protocol that honors it.

This guide explores traditional symbolic ideas for reflection and cultural interest. It does not predict outcomes or replace professional advice.

Human Design traditionally asks not what to decide, but how a person might reflect on decision-making. Its concept of Inner Authority offers a symbolic lens for noticing bodily responses. It is a self-reflection practice, not a guarantee that one response is correct.

This guide walks through all seven Authorities in the order of commonly cited population frequency, describes their traditional themes, and offers a one-week reflection experiment.

Why Authority Matters More Than Type

Most beginners obsess over their Type (Generator, Projector, Manifestor, Reflector). Type describes your energy strategy — how you engage the world. Authority describes your decision mechanic — how your body confirms a decision is correct.

You can be a textbook Generator and still burn out for a decade because you were making decisions from your mind instead of from your Sacral response. You can be a brilliant Projector and still feel invisible because you kept saying yes before your Splenic hit landed. Type without Authority is a map without a compass.

The mind — the conscious, argumentative, socially-trained voice in your head — is never your Authority in Human Design. The mind is designed to be an outer authority: a strategist for others, a synthesizer of information. It was never engineered to decide for you.

The percentages are approximate but the ordering matters: if you don't yet know your Authority, statistically it's most likely Emotional, then Sacral, then Splenic.

1. Sacral Authority — The Gut Response

Who has it: Generators and Manifesting Generators with a defined Sacral center and an undefined Solar Plexus.

How it feels from the inside: A subverbal sound in the lower belly that arrives before language. Practitioners transcribe it as "uh-huh" (yes) and "unh-unh" (no). It is not an emotion, not a thought, not a preference — it is closer to a reflex. A defined Sacral is a response mechanism: it does not initiate. It waits for something real to respond to.

The most common mistake: overriding the sound with a well-reasoned "yes" because the offer looks good on paper. The Sacral says unh-unh, the mind says "but it's a promotion," and six months later you're depleted and confused about why.

The Sacral protocol:

  • Have someone ask you a binary question out loud (or ask yourself out loud in a mirror).
  • Notice the sound or the felt-lift/drop in the belly before any thought arrives.
  • If a question requires more than one sound to answer, break it into smaller yes/no questions.
  • Trust the first sound. The second sound is your mind.

One-week experiment: For seven days, have a trusted friend ask you three binary questions a day ("Do you want to go to the gym today? Do you want tacos for dinner? Do you want to reply to that email tonight?"). Answer with the sound, not with words. Journal each night: which sounds did you obey, which did you override, and how did each outcome feel in your body twelve hours later?

2. Emotional (Solar Plexus) Authority — The Wave

Who has it: Anyone with a defined Solar Plexus center (roughly half the population, across all types except Reflectors). Solar Plexus definition overrides Sacral, Splenic, Ego, and Self-Projected authority.

How it feels from the inside: Emotional clarity is not a feeling — it is the absence of the wave. Your Solar Plexus moves through a rhythmic hope/fear, high/low, expectation/disappointment cycle whose length is unique to you (some people ride the wave in hours, others in days, others across a full week). At the top of the wave, everything is signed-yes. At the bottom, nothing is worth doing. Neither the peak nor the trough is truth. Truth lives in the flat middle, where you feel neither excited nor reluctant — just clear.

The most common mistake: deciding at the peak. The excitement is real, the yes is not. The peak is a chemical event; six days later you're unwinding a commitment you'd have declined from center.

The Emotional Authority protocol — "Sleep on it. Then sleep on it again."

  1. Never make a significant decision in the same emotional state in which the opportunity arrived.
  2. Notice the offer at least three times across the wave: once high, once low, once neutral.
  3. If it is still a yes at neutral — with no hype and no dread — it is a real yes.
  4. For small decisions, an overnight is often enough. For major ones (job, move, relationship), give it a full wave cycle (typically 3–7 days).

One-week experiment: For seven days, do not commit to anything larger than lunch on the day it is asked. When someone asks, respond only with: "I need to sit with that. I'll come back to you by [specific day]." Journal how many of those "sit with it" decisions changed once the wave moved. That percentage is your emotional-noise floor.

3. Splenic Authority — The Quiet Knowing

Who has it: Projectors, Manifestors, and rare Generators with a defined Spleen and undefined Sacral and Solar Plexus.

How it feels from the inside: A whisper — spontaneous, quiet, and delivered exactly once. The Spleen is the survival intelligence of the body: it registers safety, danger, health, and rightness in the present moment. Splenic hits sound almost like intuition, but they are more physical — a subtle "don't", a soft "this one", a body-lean toward or away from a person before you've spoken a word.

The most common mistake: waiting for a second confirmation. The Spleen does not repeat itself. If you miss the whisper, it will not shout — and by tomorrow you'll be back to reasoning yourself into whatever your mind wants.

The Splenic protocol:

  • Slow down enough to hear the first impression. Splenic Authority requires present-moment attention.
  • When you receive a hit, act on it within the same conversation if at all possible.
  • If you can't act immediately, write it down verbatim so the mind cannot rewrite it later.

One-week experiment: For seven days, keep a small notebook. Every time you meet a new person, walk into a new space, or open a new email, write down your first three-word impression before doing anything else. At week's end, review: how often was the whisper accurate, and how often did you override it in the moment?

4. Ego (Heart) Authority — The Willpower Voice

Who has it: A small percentage of Manifestors and Projectors with a defined Heart/Ego center and no defined Sacral, Solar Plexus, or Splenic center.

How it feels from the inside: A binary sense of "I want / I don't want" — or more precisely, "I have the willpower for this / I do not." Ego Authorities are the only Authorities designed to make decisions based on what they truly desire and what they are truly willing to spend energy on. When they speak, their yes and no are unusually direct — sometimes to the point of appearing selfish to Authorities who are wired differently.

The most common mistake: apologizing for the "I want," or trying to explain it in altruistic terms to make it palatable. If you have Ego Authority, the wanting is the compass.

The Ego protocol: Speak your decisions out loud. Listen for the version of the sentence that begins with "I want…" or "I don't want to…". If neither version arrives with force, the answer is not-yet.

5. Self-Projected Authority — Hearing Your Own Voice

Who has it: Projectors with a defined G-Center (Identity) and no defined Sacral, Solar Plexus, Splenic, or Ego center.

How it feels from the inside: Clarity arrives through your own speech. You do not know what you think until you have said it out loud — ideally to a trusted, neutral listener who is not trying to advise you.

The most common mistake: deciding in silence, in your head. Self-Projected Authority needs the resonance of the voice leaving the body to detect its own truth.

The Self-Projected protocol: For every real decision, talk it through with one trusted listener whose only job is to reflect back what they hear you saying. Listen for the sentence in your own voice that lands as true. That sentence is the decision.

6. Mental (Environment) Authority — The Sounding Board

Who has it: Projectors with all motor centers undefined and no other Authority available.

How it feels from the inside: Clarity arrives in dialogue over several days, and is heavily influenced by environment — the right people, in the right space, at the right time. Mental Authorities are not deciding from the mind — they are using the mind as an antenna, tuning across environments until the right context reveals the right choice.

The Mental protocol: Discuss important decisions with several different trusted people, in several different physical environments, over the course of days. Notice which environment your clarity emerges in — that is your correct place to decide from.

7. Lunar Authority — The 28-Day Cycle

Who has it: Reflectors only (fewer than 1% of the population).

How it feels from the inside: Reflectors are designed to make significant decisions across a complete lunar cycle — approximately 28 days from a given moon phase back to the same phase. Across that cycle, the transiting moon activates each of the 64 gates in turn, and the Reflector experiences the decision from every possible angle of themselves.

The Lunar protocol: For any consequential decision, mark the current moon phase and commit to sitting with the question for a full 28 days. Notice what changes across the cycle. The decision that is still yes at day 28 is real.

The Universal Diagnostic: Is This My Authority or My Mind?

Regardless of which Authority you have, the mind will always try to speak first. Use this three-question filter before acting on any "yes":

  1. Where in my body did the yes arrive? If you cannot locate it — chest, gut, throat, quiet knowing — it is likely a mental yes.
  2. Would I still say yes if the outcome looked uncool in public? Notice whether social approval is shaping the answer.
  3. Would I still say yes if I had to wait 72 hours before acting on it? Real Authority survives the pause. Mental yeses evaporate.

Your One-Week Authority Experiment

Pick the Authority that matches your chart. For seven days, run only its protocol above. Keep a two-column journal:

  • Column A — Decisions I made from Authority. What was the felt-sense in my body 24 hours later?
  • Column B — Decisions I made from mind (I overrode the signal). What was the felt-sense 24 hours later?

At the end of the week, count. Most people find that within a single week, the Column A decisions are markedly quieter in the body — less regret, less second-guessing, less need to explain. That quiet is the signature of a life being lived on-design.

Where to Go From Here

Reading about your Authority is a start. Living it takes reps — and it takes seeing your own chart, not just a description of the concept. Your Human Design chart names your Type, Authority, defined centers, and the specific gates and channels that shape how each of these plays out in your body.

Run your chart, find your Authority, and start the one-week experiment tonight.
